Side Plank - Vasisthasana
Day 15 of the #wildloveadvent challenge
Side planks offer such a strong foundation for asymmetrical movements, connecting us to the spiral myofascial line it helps us to find stability for both sides of the body which aid twisting movements, reaching, and stabilises us when walking. We really do need to help work on our 'side body' strength more often!
Lets practice:
From table top, lengthen the torso and come to into Plank Pose. Find your stability through your arms and legs. Gliding the shoulders on the wrists as you bring the hips to stay aligned with the shoulders and chest.
Turn the body weight onto the right hand. Walk the left foot half way down the mat, turning the shoulders and hips outwards towards the left, bringing the body to almost 90 degrees in alignment with the right arm.
If you want to move further from here, place the left foot over the right foot flexing the feet, extending the left arm upwards. IF this feels to much the left arm can rest on your side.
Hold for 5-10 breaths. When you are ready gentle guide the left hand back to the floor into full plank.
Settle onto the knees and take childs pose as a nice counter stretch!
Tips and tricks:
-You can practice this posture on the forearm instead. Ensure the shoulder feels comfortable over the elbow before you lift.
-Concentrate on finding the lift from your abs and core strength rather than pushing and lifting from the hand and foot that are on the floor.
-Take it slow! This pose can be tricky so even lifting and lowering can help you gain strength before holding the pose for extended time.
Benefits:
Strengthens core, obliques, aids balance, can help stability and aid exercise routines like badminton, tennis, football (think about movements where you have to dive and reach!). Strengthens hips, should girdle. Builds stamina and endurance.
✨ Take part in the 24 day advent challenge! Enjoy a pose a day that can help you find movement, presence and play.
